Microsoft has decided to update Notepad in Windows 11: Besides a new interface, the app introduces the dark theme and other features.
JANUARY 6, 2021 | Notepad app is also being released for Beta channel users. With this guide, it is possible to install the app immediately, even on the stable version of Windows 11.
Notepad revamped in Windows 11
The old tool Block Notes – Notepad – has been revolutionized for Windows 11 with a new graphical interface to be more consistent with the graphic style of Windows 11.

Dark theme and renewed graphical interface
This new version of Notepad finally introduces the dark theme. By default, Notepad will adapt to the theme set in the operating system, but you can customize its appearance in the settings, introduced with this app version.

Microsoft is keen to specify that the new Notepad app is not finished yet. In the next updates, some known problems will be fixed, such as bugs related to language switching or when using the Japanese IME; other known bugs concern the use of shift + text selection or scrolling. Performance when opening very large files will also be improved in future updates.
This Notepad update is being tested with Windows Insiders in the Dev channel. Over the next few weeks, Microsoft will continue to polish the app, fix bugs, improve performance, and the app will be available to everyone in Windows 11 over the next few months.
